Arrived In Hanoi

 Just a quick note. We arrived safe and sound after a long day of travel. We did get some sleep because our flight to Hong Kong left around 11pm on Wednesday night. Our transfer in Hing Kong was smooth and the flight to Hanoi slightly less than two hours. We are now waiting to get into our room so we can get settled. Our program starts tomorrow so we are on our own today, but there is a Viking rep here at the hotel. Can’t tell much about Hanoi yet because we have only seen a bit of it on the ride from the airport to our hotel. Today is a bit overcast, not hot, and quite smoggy. We may go out and explore a bit today after we settle in our room,  but we will keep it low key. We are 15 hours ahead of the West Coast, so body clock wise it is a bit after 9 pm Thursday night while it is a bit past noon on Friday here in Hanoi. More later.

PS, they take no smoking on Cathay Pacific planes quite seriously. Hong Kong Airport is also very serious about no smoking and no vaping.

  Patti and I are just a few weeks from our next Viking trip, this time to Vietnam and Cambodia. We depart on March 5th from SFO and fly to Hanoi via Hong Kong. For me it will be a return to Vietnam and for Patti it will be her first trip to Asia. It was 56 years ago that I was stationed in Vietnam. When our Viking trip ends I have arranged a tour with a Vietnamese tour company of the area where I was stationed from late July 1970 until late May 1971. Living conditions for the people in the area where I was stationed can best be described as third world. The people were peasants who were primarily rice farmers and fishermen. Our Day In Hanoi

 Today was a day of touring Hanoi by bus and by foot. To be a bus driver in Hanoi requires great skill because of the thousands of motorcycles and motor scooters that clog the streets, many of which are extremely narrow. There are also cars, but motorbikes rule the streets and there don’t seem to be any traffic regulations, with the exception of the intersections where there are stoplights. Uncontrolled intersections are survival of the fittest, and since we did not witness any accidents, I suppose the default assumption is that all Hanoi motorcyclists and motorscooterists must be in the fittest category. It is really wild and noisy. Use of horns and the beep beep from two wheeled vehicles is the norm. If your beeper on your cycle or scooter is not working, you just might lose your driving privileges in Hanoi. Cars are very expensive since all are imported, so two wheeled gas powered vehicles make sense for people, especially if the expense of a car would be prohibitive. (Note to s...

Wheels Up Next Wednesdy Night

    That is right. We take off from SFO late next Wednesday night close to 11 pm, destination Hanoi. Our carrier is Cathay Pacific and we will fly through Hong Kong where we will be on the ground for about two and a half hours before we board another Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong to Hanoi where we will land around 10 am Hanoi time on Friday morning (7 pm Thursday night on the west coast). Since we will fly over the International Dateline we will lose Thursday on our way to Vietnam. Undoubtedly, the airline will offer us a full meal soon after takeoff, but since it will be way past bedtime when we take off we will take a pass on the meal in favor of getting some sleep; and I may need to do Wordle and Connections after midnight to keep any streaks alive.
